I have always enjoyed this time of year. The season brings bright lights, joyful music, and so many smiles. When I was a child, my parents would bundle up my siblings and I, put us into our station wagon and drive downtown along Portage Avenue to admire the lights and the beautiful window displays at Eaton’s and The Bay. Those memories are magical.
Today, when I spend time in the ward and across the city, that same wonderful feeling returns. Twinkling lights spill from homes, buildings, and storefronts, weaving a festive charm that reflects the many cultures, religions, and traditions celebrating this season. And if your heart is craving even more holiday cheer, make your way to 724 McAdam Ave, where McAdam Santa Brad and Mrs. Claus are ready to sprinkle a little extra enchantment on your day.
My compliments to everyone who brings such warmth and goodwill to our neighbourhoods. Last week, a magical Skate with Santa was held at the Garden City Community Centre. A big shout out to organizers Margie, Brady, Lorrie, Andy, Cathie, Bryan and others – this annual event brings together families from across our neighbourhoods for a festive and memorable celebration. Events like this not only bring joy to children but also strengthen the sense of community that defines our area.
This is also a time when many organizations seek donations to support families in need. In our ward, Elwick Village Centre is asking residents to donate gently used or new items, and just before Christmas, children will be able to wrap a gift for a parent or sibling. Many other groups are also collecting food, clothing, and even items for pets – every contribution makes a difference.
Winter is also the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty around us. A brisk walk through our parks, a family skate, or an evening stroll to admire holiday lights can lift our spirits and remind us of the simple joys of the season.
I also encourage residents to explore and support our local winter markets, where artisans and small businesses showcase their creativity and hard work. Whether you’re picking up baked goods, handmade crafts, or unique gifts for loved ones, every purchase strengthens our local economy and helps our neighbourhood businesses thrive.
As we move through the winter months, let’s embrace everything our community has to offer. Get outside, stay active, connect with neighbours, and celebrate the season in ways both big and small.
From my family to yours, best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
